Company Profile
G.E. Dolbear & Associates is an independent consulting firm dedicated to achieving success with its clients projects. With Geoffrey E. Dolbear as president, the firm specializes in three main aspects of service: solving energy and environmental problems, marketing that helps clients find customers for their products and services, and writing and editing technical reports. The breadth of knowledge and know-how collected in Geoff and his associates provides the foundation for the firms success in all three areas.
The company was founded in 1987 by Geoff, a physical chemist with more than 35 years of problem solving and management experience in the chemical and energy industries. He is committed to using this experience to better serve the individual needs of his clients.
For larger projects, the firm assembles project teams selected from its associates and other experts in various fields of chemistry, engineering, physics, biotechnology, marketing, oceanography, scientific and business writing, and laboratory management.
Solving Energy and Environmental Problems
Through its many areas of experience and expertise, G.E. Dolbear & Associates provides scientific and technical consulting in energy processing, fuel properties and environmental chemistry. Some project experience built on this background includes:
Geoff and his team of associates represent a high concentration of expertise on the chemistry of crude oil and its fractions, with specific expertise in FCC, all areas of hydroprocessing, refinery modeling, asphaltene chemistry, and coking. Among them they have dozens of issued US patents and hundreds of publications in these areas.
Geoff and one of his associates pioneered the development of fluid catalytic cracking catalysts that produce high-octane gasoline. One patent from this work covers low levels of platinum in FC catalysts, widely licensed for oxidizing CO in FCC regenerators.
Work with coal ranges from problem solving in coal drying to applied research in coal chemistry. For three years, Geoff led a team of chemists, engineers and technicians that developed a route to terephthalic acid from coal.
Geoff is an active member in the American Chemical Societys Division of Petroleum Chemistry, and was Treasurer for the years 1991 to 1993 and Division Chair in 1998.
Marketing and Technology Transfer
G.E. Dolbear & Associates has experience in several areas related to marketing and technology transfer:
Geoff served as Director of Marketing for a small environmental firm for five years. During this time, the company grew from the founders to a staff of 25 full time employees. For another client, a startup instrument company, Geoff developed marketing materials, handled customer correspondence, identified prospects and made sales calls to demonstrate instruments.
G.E. Dolbear & Associates prepared and executed a study on the profitability of advertising in magazines by chemical consultants, in order to keep a finger on the pulse of the industry.
Our associates include marketing experts that handle all aspects of direct and retail marketing of technical products to business and consumers.
Writing and Editing
Along with solving environmental problems and providing marketing services, G.E. Dolbear & Associates offers writing and editing services to its clients. This type of work grew out of Geoffs work with CHEMTECH magazine during the 1980s. Geoff worked closely with the editors of the magazine editing more than 50 articles for publication, and converting "chemical-ese" into plain English. He also published several articles in the magazine, and contributed to its monthly "Heartcut" column for more than five years.
Many consulting projects involve writing or editing reports. These include projects with the primary objective of reviewing and assessing the state of an area of technology. Geoff and his Associates have done many such reports for individual clients or for multi-client studies. Geoff is also a regular contributor to The World Book Encyclopedia, and writes for a number of magazines. He publishes his own bimonthly newsletter, The Freebie. The newsletter, available on the web at http://www.gedolbear.com, with more than 400 regular readers, covers topics range from processing technology to personal productivity.
With team member John Magee, Geoff authored the well-received introductory Petroleum Catalysis in Non-Technical Language, aimed at providing background for managers in the refining field.
Geoff has also published articles in all of the major US fly fishing magazines.
